Women and young academics as Tassos names new ministers

PRESIDENT Tassos Papadopoulos yesterday named two high-flying women and two relatively young academics as caretaker ministers to replace the four AKEL appointees that resigned from the government on Wednesday.

The four ministers, all non-political appointees, will serve out the terms of office of their former predecessors until the presidential elections in February.

Journalists praise court decision over Politis libel case

THE Journalists Union has welcomed a Supreme Court decision which reversed a libel award against Politis newspaper.

The libel case revolved around a story which Politis had published about the then chairman of the Bar Association Nicos Papaefstathiou.

The union yesterday described the decision as “victory for freedom of speech”.

MEPs pressure north over Karpas power plan

TWO Green MEPs yesterday called for urgent measures to be taken to prevent a continued “chaotic building spree” in the north of the island, and warned against the Turkish Cypriot authority’s plan to add the eastern tip of the Karpas peninsula to the electricity grid – something the two said was intended to “pave the way for huge foreign investments aimed at developing a mass tourist resort”.

Jealous man attacks pregnant girlfriend with cutter

A MAN has been remanded in custody for viciously attacking his pregnant girlfriend with a cutter.

The 37-year-old Romanian suspect is under investigation for causing grievous bodily harm and possession of a dangerous weapon for the attack that took place in Kapedes village in the Nicosia district.

Man thanks judge for fine

A MAN who admitted to beating his wife after a row at work yesterday wanted to shake the hand of a judge who let him off with a suspended sentence and a £300 fine.

Ekrem Karadayi, 52, from the Turkish occupied village of Elia, admitted to the single charge of attacking his wife on July 10 this year and causing her injuries in the Nicosia village of Astromeritis.
