Low-key funerals for Greek Cypriot missing

FIFTEEN Greek Cypriots listed as missing since the Turkish invasion in 1974, whose remains have been exhumed and recently identified are being buried at various cemeteries in different areas of the island.

The first burial, that of Pieris Adamou from occupied Yialousa, was held on Sunday in Dherynia, while Savvas Kallis Hadjipanteli, also from Yialousa, will be buried tomorrow.

The Committee for Missing Persons (CMP) has so far notified the families of 28 people, 15 Greek Cypriots and 13 Turkish Cypriots, listed as missing, whose remains have been exhumed recently in Cyprus.

Almost 300 persons have been exhumed so far, 50-60 of them Turkish Cypriots.

The CMP, a tripartite committee with representatives of the two communities and the UN, was set up in the early 1980s. In recent months, it has stepped up its work to help resolve the humanitarian issue.
