Police investigate Limassol drug overdose

A 21-YEAR-OLD Polish man died yesterday after he was found unconscious during the early hours of Sunday in what authorities believe was a drug-induced coma.

Marios Kozorofsky was found at Lady’s Mile beach in the Limassol district during a joint operation between British Bases and government police following a tip off that drugs were being used at a dance party in the area.

The young man was rushed to Limassol general hospital where he finally died yesterday despite duty doctors’ best effort to save him.

It is believed he had been taking drugs and drinking alcohol on the night in question.

State pathologist Eleni Antoniou told the Cyprus Mail cause of death was due to pulmonary edema as well as haemorrhagic necrosis in the lungs, kidneys and liver.

Antoniou said the results of the toxicology tests, due back tomorrow, would determine to what extent Kozorofsky’s death was drug related.

“Anything toxic that enters a person’s organism can causes these symptoms,” she added.

The state pathologist said ecstasy pills had been found in the young man’s trouser pockets.

During the joint operation on Sunday police stop searched and arrested seven individuals who were found in possession of drugs. The suspects were yesterday charged in writing and released, police said.

From January 1, 2006 till the end of May this year, Cyprus has seen 24 drug related-deaths.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a 15-year-old boy was found in a drunken comatose state in a parking lot near Engomi’s discotheque area in the Nicosia district on Sunday morning, police said.

The teen was found at around 3.45am who, according to witnesses, had been drinking alcohol earlier at a disco in the area.

The 15-year-old was taken to Nicosia general hospital where he received first aid and was released.

Ayios Dhometios police station is investigating.
