Man found guilty of sexually harassing his niece

A NICOSIA man has been found guilty by a Criminal Court of indecently assaulting and sexually harassing his young niece.

On Friday, the 45-year-old was found guilty by the three-judge panel after a lengthily trial which resulted in the victim being forced to testify against him.

This week, the court will hear the final plea for mitigation from the man’s defence lawyer before sentencing is to be carried out. He could be sentenced for up to seven years in prison.

According to sources, the defendant was said to have indecently assaulted and sexually assaulted his niece on a number of occasions between 2001 and 2004.

The court sessions were conducted behind closed doors because of the gravity of the offences and the age of the victim, who is said to be in her early teens.

The defendant was said to have stroked and kissed the victim’s breasts and genitals. Other accounts include the defendant forcing the victim to give him oral sex and forcing the young girl to watch him masturbate.

The victim had been begging her uncle to stop but to no avail.

She finally told her dark secret to her fellow pupil of hers and her boyfriend who persuaded her to tell her mother and her aunt.

The police were later informed resulting in the arrest of the man, who denied any wrongdoing.

According to the psychiatric evaluation on the victim, to this day she still suffers from an eating disorder and depression.
