PRESIDENT Tassos Papadopoulos yesterday met with the President of the European Parliament Hans Gert Poettering in Brussels, with whom he discussed the Cyprus problem, the accession of Cyprus to the Eurozone and the European Council.

Pedestrian killed in Nicosia crash

A 57-YEAR-OLD pedestrian was killed yesterday morning after he was mowed down by an oncoming car as he tried to cross a Nicosia street, police said.

Andreas Tsaggarides from Ayious Trimithias village was killed at around 7.45am as he tried to cross Ifigenias street in Acropolis. Tsaggarides was the 39th person killed on the road this year.

House tweaks euro laws

THE PARLIAMENT yesterday approved amendments to the law regulating Cyprus’ entry into the Eurozone.

The new bill, submitted to Parliament by the Finance Ministry, aims at fine-tuning the four bills forced through in March to meet EU deadlines.

Kurdish man fled south to feed family

A NICOSIA Court yesterday heard how a Kurdish man tried to pass into the south with a false identity card because he needed to feed his family.

The plea was heard during the remand hearing of the 31-year-old, who investigators have stated is under investigation for conspiracy, identity fraud, illegal entrance into Cyprus and illegal residence in Cyprus.

Seminar to promote women’s role in workplace

A SEMINAR aimed at promoting gender equality and encouraging a more active role for women in the workplace was yesterday deemed “a great success” by its organisers.

Would-be dealers brought cannabis from Holland

HOLLAND has been singled out as the country from which large quantities of drugs were imported recently to Cyprus, Larnaca Criminal Court heard yesterday.

The conclusion was reached following two serious drug-related cases, where it emerged that almost 34kg of cannabis seized at Larnaca airport came from Holland.
