Jailed for killing colleague by reckless driving

A FORMER public servant was yesterday jailed for two and a half years for causing the death of a colleague by negligent driving.

Arbitration in bank dispute

THE NATIONAL Bank of Greece and bank employees union ETYK have agreed on talks to resolve a dispute that could set a precedent on labour disputes within the sector.

In a deal brokered by Labor Minister Antonis Vassiliou, the two sides agreed to the establishment of an independent arbitration committee, whose verdict will be binding.

Little Marilena will not be put up for adoption

THE Labour Minister has promised the aunt of an eight-year-old girl, who is in the care of Social Services, that she will not be put up for adoption to an outside family.

Minister Antonis Vasiliou’s announcement on Thursday came just days after Marilena’s aunt was told her application to adopt her had been rejected.

Shacolas group to round prices down for the euro

THE ISLAND’S largest retail group said yesterday it would reduce its prices in an effort to ease fears that the island’s adoption of the euro in January 2008 would prompt a bout of profiteering.

The Shacolas Group, which imports items ranging from fork lifts to face creams, said price reductions would be about one per cent across the board when converted to euros next year.

Filipina accused of attempted murder

POLICE have arrested a 31-year-old Filipino woman on suspicion of the attempted murder of her Jordanian boyfriend.

Investigators have also arrested a 29-year-old friend of the suspect, also from the Philippines, who is believed to have helped her hide from arresting officers.

Both women are also under investigation for illegal residence on the island.

Judges say addiction no excuse for burglary

TWO DRUG addicts from Nicosia were jailed yesterday after pleading guilty to burglary in two separate cases.

Both men, who had drug and alcohol related problems, had previous convictions, with both judges saying they had no choice but to remove them from society.
