Man held for selling stolen goods to antique shop

A MAN has been arrested and detained in police custody on suspicion of selling stolen goods to an antique shop in Nicosia.

Christos Giorgiou, 28 from Nicosia, was yesterday remanded in police custody for five days by a Nicosia District Court after being named by the owner of the antiques shop.

Addressing the court during yesterday’s remand hearing, CID Sergeant Costas Xanthou told the judge: “On Tuesday, we received a tip-off that stolen goods were being sold at an antiques shop situated in Limassol Avenue in Nicosia. During a search of the shop, the owner gave us two urns and two vases which he claims he had bought off two men for a fee of £75.”

Investigators were also shown two transaction invoices that took place on October 10 last year.

“Later that same afternoon, we obtained a search warrant and investigated the house and car of the suspect” continued the officer.

“Inside his car, we found various items made of crystal and a lamp. The suspect could not give us a plausible explanation as to where he had got them from and was immediately placed under arrest.”

According to police, Giorgiou reportedly confessed to stealing the good that were sold to the antique shop, saying he had stolen them from two different houses from Engomi and Ayios Dometios.

He also confessed to stealing various other items from gardens of other houses.

Yesterday, Xanthou told the court that more statements needed to be taken to get a better idea of the crime which was committed.

Judge Yiota Kyriakidou remanded Giorgiou in police custody for five days.
