Bank union orders sympathy strike

BANKS across the island will stage a two-hour stoppage on Monday, in sympathy with their colleagues at the National Bank of Greece, the bankers’ unions ETYK said yesterday.

The walkout was announced by ETYK boss Loizos Hadjicostis, who also said the union would submit a strike benefit to the employees of NBG.

Monday’s stoppage will last from 12.30pm to 2.30pm.

Arrest warrant out for serial stalker

POLICE are hunting for a Nicosia serial stalker who has terrorised hundreds of women over several years, police chief Iacovos Papacostas said yesterday.

When found, the man, known to women as Christos or Christodoulos, will face criminal prosecution, he said.

IT IS unlikely that those responsible for leaking information and personal data in a CyTA phone tap scandal will be prosecuted.

The investigative report into the affair was yesterday handed to Attorney-general Petros Klerides, who said he would now “study the report to see if prosecutions could be made”.
The scandal was first reported by Politis newspaper back in March.

Civil servants lose retirement age appeal

TWO CIVIL servants who claimed they were unfairly forced into early retirement have lost their appeal at the Supreme Court.

Yesterday, the 12-judge panel of the Supreme Court informed the two appellants that they did not have the jurisdiction to intervene in laws that had been passed by Parliament.

Cyprus unemployment among lowest in Europe

CYPRUS has the fourth-lowest unemployment rate in the EU.

Figures for April show the rate at 4.4%, according to figures released by Eurostat.
In the Eurozone, average unemployment stood at 7.1%.

The lowest rate was in the Netherlands with 3.3%, followed by Denmark with 3.4%, Ireland 4% and Cyprus 4.4%.
