‘Involved’ named in illegal Greek Cypriot property transactions

List of names handed over in illegal Greek Cypriot property transactions

DISY deputies Giorgios Georgiou and Kyriacos Hadjiyiannis yesterday met Attorney-general Petros Clerides to hand over the list of names of people said to be involved in selling Greek Cypriot property in the north to foreign companies.

Georgiou told reporters there were five cases of sales in Kyrenia and Famagusta and that there were allegations concerning another four but that these would not be handed over at this stage.

He said the Attorney-general would decide whether there was any justification for criminal charges in the five cases.

Earlier this month Georgiou made his ‘shock’ revelations at the House, claiming he had a list of high-profile people dealing in properties in the north. In one instance he referred to a company set up in 1968 in the Cyprus Republic, that purchased 300 donums of land in Kyrenia.

The information is said to include evidence of companies based in the south involved in illegal transactions of Greek Cypriot property in the north and Turkish Cypriot properties in the south.
Yesterday he urged the government to improve the financial lot of refugees so that they would not be tempted to sell their properties in the north through third parties.

The House plenum yesterday was to close a wide-ranging discussion on the property issue but House President Demetris Christofias called for it to be resumed next Thursday because he said it seemed the parties could not agree unanimously on the action that needed to be taken, and it would have to be unanimous, he said.
