Single parents suffer racism

THERE are currently 18,000 single-parent families in Cyprus, of which only 1,400 receive benefits from the state.

The problems faced by one-parent families were brought to the forefront during yesterday’s House Institutions Committee, where deputies heard that foreign single mothers-of-three receive just £500 in state benefits each month.

Beaches amongst cleanest in EU

ALMOST half of all school leavers want to become primary school teachers, despite the long waiting list to teach at state schools, reports said yesterday.
According to Phileleftheros, 42.2 per cent of this year’s students had applied to sit university exams to attend teacher training courses, undeterred by the fact that in 2005 there were 1,205 unemployed teachers.
