Young man fighting for his life after hit-and-run

A 19-YEAR-OLD Ukrainian boy was yesterday fighting for his life at Nicosia general hospital after he was run over by another teen driver, police said.

The accident occurred at around 10.40pm in Limassol when, under circumstances being investigated, an 18-year-old in a double cabin vehicle crashed into the youth’s motorbike and fled the scene.

Passersby took down the car’s number plate, called police and rushed to help the 19-year-old, who is a permanent resident of Cyprus. The young man was taken to Limassol general hospital but due to the severity of his head injuries was transferred to Nicosia hospital’s intensive care unit.

Minutes after the accident occurred, the 18-year-old is believed to have lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a ditch. Three friends, who were the young man’s passengers, allegedly helped him move the car and took him to Paphos general hospital for treatment. They then proceeded to take the car to a repair shop, where police later found it.

Investigators were able to trace the boy’s identity through the number plate given to them by witnesses. Police said he did not have a driving licence.

The car was registered under the name of the 18-year-old’s father, who is believed to have said he was unaware that his son had taken the car.

The young man is said to have confessed to his involvement in the accident and was arrested for further questioning.

Pissouri police are investigating.
