Killed while overtaking

A MAN from Sotira village was killed yesterday morning as attempted to overtake another vehicle on the Dherynia-Frenaros road.

The victim, Christoforos Georgiou Matsioukou, 21, was on his way to work at around 6.50am when he overtook another car and crashed head on with a pick-up truck driven by a 22-year-old from Ayia Napa.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

Matsioukou, who is the oldest of three brothers, was killed instantly from the impact whilet the other driver sustained minor injuries.

The victim was on his way to a building site close to the village of Vrysoulles where he works as a builder.

His death yesterday prompted a response from Famagusta Traffic Police Chief George Konias who said, “Dangerous overtaking is one of the biggest causes of traffic-related deaths along with drink driving and driving without a seatbelt or helmet.”
