‘I didn’t mean to kill him’

THE CAREER criminal who shot Iacovos Kyriakou on Monday told police in a statement he had not meant to kill the father of two, and begged forgiveness from dead man’s family.
Kyriacou, 46, was shot in the stomach at point blank range on Monday after chasing bank robber Zanettos Tsapatsaris, 23, in his car and cornering him in the parking area of a Larnaca supermarket.

Killed while overtaking

A MAN from Sotira village was killed yesterday morning as attempted to overtake another vehicle on the Dherynia-Frenaros road.

The victim, Christoforos Georgiou Matsioukou, 21, was on his way to work at around 6.50am when he overtook another car and crashed head on with a pick-up truck driven by a 22-year-old from Ayia Napa.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

Man jailed for assaulting cops

AN ELECTRICIAN found guilty of assaulting two policemen yesterday was jailed for three months.

Georgian-born Kyriakos Tachlarides, 63, was convicted of of attacking and swearing at two policemen at the Ayios Dometios police station after he was arrested for being drunk and disorderly back in 2005

Cyprus Airways plane hit by lightning

A CYPRUS Airways (CY) flight to Athens was forced to abort and return to Larnaca airport yesterday morning after its right engine was struck by lightning.

The Airbus A319, carrying 118 passengers and seven crew, took off from Larnaca at 9.30am and was struck by lightening over Paphos. As a precaution, the captain decided to turn the plane around and head back to Larnaca.

Royal Marines fined for attack on taxi driver

TWO British Royal Marines were yesterday convicted of causing actual bodily harm following a disagreement over payment of a taxi fare after a night out in March.

The two, named as Jonathan Hart, 22, and Chris Douglas, 27, both of 45 Commando, Royal Marines, are expected to head back to the UK early next week.

A MAN from Kokkinotrimithia village, accused of threatening to shoot his father, yesterday told a court his father was a terrible father, an alcoholic and a gambler.

The 25-year-old man had previously pleaded guilty to two charges of illegal possession of weapons and using a weapon with intent to threaten.

Hundreds of pigs die after power cut

MORE THAN 415 pigs died yesterday in Athienou when they suffocated after a fault cut their pen’s electricity supply.

The pigs, worth a total £15,000, died between the hours of 8-11 yesterday morning due to a lack of ventilation. The animals, weighing from 25-40 kilos each and aged between two to five months, were not insured by the ‘Kaila Brothers’ pig breeding company.
