Olympos striker hits 16 goals!

OLYMPOS Xylofagou FC striker Panagiotis Pontikos made headlines around the island on the weekend after scoring sixteen times to help his side beat SEK Ayios Athanasios FC 24-3 on the final day of the season!

Pontikos, 27, was not even in the top five of top scorers in third division but he doubled his tally in the single game against SEK to take himself to the top of the scoring charts. SEK, who finished their season rooted at the foot of the table with just six points and 93 goals conceded in 26 games, fielded a team consisting almost entirely of their under-17 squad and Pontikos and co took full advantage.

His goals were timed at 3, 20, 33, 35, 47, 50, 55, 56, 58, 61, 68, 75, 76, 83, 86 and 87. Meanwhile his teammate Lefteris Kontolefteros hit five (5, 29, 30, 43 and 53) whilst Pontikos’ older brother Yiannakis scored on 23 minutes.

Olympos’s other goals came from Marcos Brener on 33 minutes and Theodoulos Petoussis in the 64th minute. SEK’s goals were scored by three players of the under-17 squad.
Pontikos used to be a former player of Alki FC when they were in the first division during the 2001/2002 season.

This season, Olympos managed to gain promotion to the second division by grabbing third position in the league.

Yesterday, a Cyprus Football Association (CFA) spokesperson was unable to confirm if Pontikos’ goals or the result were a Cypriot record but did say “I can not remember a result like that in all the years I have been involved with football. The same goes for the amount of goals scored by the player”.
