Public warned against tackling criminals

OFFICIALS last night warned members of the public of the dangers of tackling violent criminals, after the murder of a man chasing a bank robber in Larnaca yesterday.

Police Chief Iacovos Papacostas paid tribute to Iacovos Kyriacou, expressing his sadness at the “unfair loss of such a heroic man”.

Bank warning over ongoing strike

THE NATIONAL Bank of Greece in Cyprus warned yesterday that refusal from bank employees’ union ETYK to put an end to the strike that has paralysed the bank since last week would prompt them to take the matter to a European Court.

Greek investigators heading for Cyprus in Helios probe

A GREEK investigation into the Helios air disaster that claimed 121 lives may be coming to the island by the end of the month, as Cypriot detectives head abroad to gather more depositions.

According to daily Phileleftheros, the Cypriot investigative team is currently in London to interview Boeing mechanic Alan Irwin, considered a key figure in the events of August 14, 2005.

THE Cyprus economy remains strong and set for further growth in 2007 and 2008, boosting the island’s chances for euro zone approval from EU finance ministers next week.

Tensions rise as Turkey tenders for oil search

TURKISH oil company TPAO has opened a tender for oil and gas exploration in the Mediterranean, it said on its website late on Sunday, a move likely to increase tensions over Cyprus.

The proposal covers the same parts of the eastern Mediterranean as a tender launched by Cyprus in February.

Cyclist killed

A 19-YEAR-old man was yesterday killed on the Athienou-Avdellerou road near Larnaca, when the bicycle he was riding was hit by a car.

The incident happened at approximately 8.40pm, as the Moldovan was attempting to turn around before being hit by a car driven by a local man.

Larnaca police said that his bicycle was not equipped with any lights.

A FORMER business partner of President Tassos Papadopoulos yesterday admitted to personally signing credit orders worth millions of dollars for the benefit of Yugoslav nationals at the height of the UN embargo against that country in the 1990s.

Armenian pilgrimage to ruined monastery in north

TWO hundred Armenians on Sunday returned to the abandoned mediaeval monastery of Saint Magar in the north, where prayers were said for the first time in 33 years.
