Deputies lead by example to become organ donors

DEPUTIES on the House Health Committee yesterday took the initiative to register themselves on the organ donor list, following the suggestion of EDEK’s Marinos Sizopoulos.
Despite various reservations, the committee unanimously agreed on the move, with some members saying they were already on the list.

Paedophile jailed for six years

A 62-YEAR-old paedophile was yesterday jailed for six years for sexually molesting three young boys at his Larnaca apartment.

The offences took place at the 62-year-old’s Mackenzie flat between July 1, 2005 and July 22, 2006.

NEW Central Bank Governor Athanasios Orphanides said yesterday his top priority in his new post would be the smooth introduction of the euro in Cyprus.

Orphanides, a former adviser to the US Federal Reserve, was sworn in yesterday in the presence of his predecessor Christodoulos Christodoulou and Finance Minister Michalis Sarris.

THERE IS a crying need in Cyprus for dialogue, debate and discussion between and among the island’s communities, UNFICYP Chief of Mission Michael Moller said yesterday.

Defence Minister dies

DEFENCE Minister Nicos Symeonides died yesterday after losing an ongoing battle with a deteriorating respiratory condition.

Symeonides, who was 68, was first admitted to the Nicosia General Hospital on January 5 after displaying symptoms of pneumonia, suffering a small heart attack while undergoing a biopsy on his lungs a week later.
