Medical waste found in trash

THE HEALTH MINISTER yesterday promised to launch an immediate investigation following the discovery of hundreds of blood-stained medical microscope slides in a Limassol recycling bin.

A resident of the town yesterday told the Mail that he went to deposit some wine bottles in the recycling bin placed in the market area of Lelas Karayianni Street on Friday afternoon.

Two die in weekend accidents

According to police, Evripidis Nicolaides’ car crashed through the side railings and came to a halt in the opposite lane.

GREEK Archbishop Christodoulos yesterday called his visit to Cyprus a “long overdue pilgrimage to the island of saints and martyrs.”

Christodoulos, whose full title is Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, is the first head of the Greek Church to visit the island in 40 years.

CID investigating saucy prison guard ad

POLICE have launched an investigation against a prison guard who allegedly placed the telephone number of a female colleague in the pink pages of a newspaper.

The matter is now being looked at by CID after the complaint by the female prison guard, who has told investigators that she suspects a colleague who works in the same office as her.

Airport charges ‘cheaper than Athens and Malta’

TRANSPORT Minister Harris Thrassou yesterday dismissed claims by airlines and travel agents that charges at the island’s two airports would be higher than those of competitors.

Thrassou was speaking during a visit to the site of the new Larnaca Airport by Parliament’s Communications and Works Committee.

Paedophile jailed for three years

A LORRY driver from the village of Kato Pyrgos in Tylliria was yesterday jailed for three years after being found guilty of taking sexual advantage of a girl of 13.

The 54-year-old man, who yesterday appeared in court accompanied by an older relative believed to be his mother, was arrested on February 13 last year having been previously beaten up by relatives of the young girl.
