Police suspect break-in gone wrong after 20-year-old victim found bound and gagged

A 20-YEAR-old Russian woman was yesterday murdered in her Nicosia apartment, police said.

She was found fully clothed in her bedroom, bound and gagged with tape.

Her 31-year-old flatmate, also from Russia, was badly beaten and rushed to Nicosia General Hospital for treatment.

Papadopoulos aide denies Serb sanction-busting

A FORMER business partner of President Tassos Papadopoulos yesterday denied their firm violated UN sanctions against Yugoslavia in the 1990s by helping Serbian firms get cash out of the country.

Matsakis claims he was mistreated by bases police

MEP Marios Matsakis was discharged from Larnaca hospital yesterday after being treated for the dehydration he suffered during a two-day hunger strike in a British bases prison.

In statements to reporters, Matsakis claimed he had been mistreated by bases police while being transported by helicopter from Akrotiri to Dhekelia.

Lymbia residents block road to waste site

LYMBIA residents were at it again yesterday, this time by blocking off access to the site of the proposed waste disposal plant.

The protesters used their cars to block the road, refusing construction vehicles entry to the site. A strong police presence was on hand and ordered the residents to remove their vehicles and open the road.

Former competition committee chairman in court

A MAN who as acted as chairman of the Competition Protection Committee (CPC) and the Cyprus Referees’ Committee was in court yesterday charged with fraud.
A similar charge of abuse of authority in the same offence was dismissed by Judge Alexandros Panayiotou half way through the trial.

Larnaca pleads for cash to upgrade town

THE LARNACA Mayor yesterday called on the government to provide the necessary funds in order to develop the town.

Ecstasy bust in north

TURKISH Cypriot authorities have seized 3,301 ecstasy pills in two separate operations in the past week.

On Friday, police discovered 1,935 pills in a car heading for Kyrenia. The driver Metin Aydin and his brother Tekin Aydin, both from Turkey, were arrested.

Earlier in the week, another 1,366 ecstasy pills were seized in a park in northern Nicosia.

Government needs more civil servants

THE FINANCE Ministry yesterday requested the creation of 567 new positions in the public service, at an estimated annual cost of £16 million.

The Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Christos Patsalides, announced the request during yesterday’s meeting of the House Finance Committee, where the Ministry’s supplementary budget for 2007 was submitted.
