Fed expert named new Central Bank boss

PRESIDENT Tassos Papadopoulos yesterday named Athanasios Orphanides as the new Central Bank boss to succeed long-serving Christodoulos Christodoulou, just hours after the incumbent announced he would not be seeking a renewal of his term.
Orphanides’ five-year tenure begins in May.

Akamas plan to go to Cabinet

THE AGRICULTURE Ministry will submit its plan for the Akamas peninsula to the next Cabinet meeting, Minister Photis Photiou announced yesterday.

“The preparation is complete, the proposal is complete and we are ready to discuss it at the Cabinet”, Photiou told reporters after meeting with the European Parliament’s Committee for the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety.

THE Health Ministry will not be the ministry we all know today in a few years’ time, but the strategic brain and co-ordinator behind health matters in Cyprus, Cypriot MEP Adamos Adamou stated yesterday.

Fire tragedy averted

A FIRE that broke out in a five-storey apartment building in the Nicosia suburb of Engomi on Thursday night nearly ended in tragedy as three residents became trapped on the fifth floor.

The fire services arrived in time to extinguish the fire, which started on the second floor, before it reached the top floor.

Lymbia leader condemns protest onslaught

LYMBIA COMMUNITY leader Savvas Sophocleous yesterday condemned the actions of lawyer George Karapatakis, who called the government a “dictatorship” during an argument with Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis on Thursday.

Community leader Savvas Sophocleous slammed the lawyer, who he said did not represent the village community, but only a minority of the citizens.

Lillikas: July 8 process the only option

FOREIGN Minister George Lillikas said yesterday that there was currently no process which would create the preconditions for the resumption of talks aiming at a Cyprus settlement, other than the July 8 agreement.

The two people that were arrested for the attacks at the convent late on Thursday night were formally charged by police yesterday.
