Don’t blame the roads, blame the drivers

CYPRIOT drivers, and not bad roads, are the main cause of the island’s high traffic accident rate, a road safety expert said yesterday.

“The road network might have some failures and sign posting might need improving, but over and above all the imperfections, drivers are mainly responsible for traffic accidents,” Andreas Papas said.

THE FILES on a police probe into a complaint made by a private individual have gone missing, a witness told the court in the case of Predrag Djordjevic vs the Popular Bank yesterday.

Djordjevic, a Serbian businessman based in Nicosia, is suing the bank for compensation and damages in a 900,000 Deutschmark transaction that was never completed.

Taxi driver attacked by suspected British soldiers

POLICE are on the lookout for two British men who attacked a taxi driver in the Limassol resort of Yermasoyia in the early hours of yesterday.

According to taxi driver Demetris Panayi, 58, the two British men, suspected to be soldiers not permanently based on the island, were picked in Yermasoyia and asked Panayi to drive them back to Paramali, where they were staying.

Blaze threatens central Nicosia home

A 40-YEAR-old refugee almost lost his Nicosia home for the second time yesterday after a roaring blaze broke out in his back yard.

Christakis Vourkos, originally from Kyrenia, was at the bank when his wife called him around midday and told him their house was on fire.

Divorced mother wins right to stay in house

A MOTHER of two has won her right to stay in the house bought for her and her ex-husband while they were married.

The complaint was filed at the Nicosia District Court by the former father-in-law of the woman, who wanted back the house, which he had bought for the married couple as a wedding present.

Kasoulides to decide on presidential bid in May

FORMER Foreign Minister and DISY MEP Ioannis Kasoulides said yesterday he would decide in May whether he would contest the presidency in next year’s elections.

In a statement yesterday, Cassoulides said Cyprus needed to turn in a different direction than what was being offered today by the current government, and that his own presidential aspirations were well known.

Murder suspects ‘have confessed’

THE SUSPECTS in the murder of a 58-year-old Turkish Cypriot businessman from Pergamos have reportedly confessed to the crime.

Ahmed Mesut Mendesie had gone missing on February 22. Last Sunday, police, acting on a tip-off, discovered the corpse of Mendesie in a valley on the left side of the Vouno main road.
