Fireworks arrest

POLICE yesterday arrested a 20-year-old man from Limassol after finding a large amount of fireworks in his possession.

Officers are also looking for a second person, who together with the 20-year-old, are believed to be part of an underground gang in charge of bringing over fireworks from the occupied north.

A total of 1,664 fireworks were found hidden in the 20-year-old’s car in Yermasoyia, after the Drug Squad stopped him for a routine check.

The man was taken to Limassol Headquarters, where he was arrested after admitting to purchasing the fireworks. Limassol District Court later ordered his four-day remand.

In his deposition, the 20-year-old named a specific person as his seller, who the police are now in search of.

“We are carrying out investigations in our attempt to finally neutralise this circuit that is promoting fireworks to youths,” Limassol Police Director Tasos Economides said yesterday.
