Police taking the taxpayer for a ride

Sir,

I would like to challenge the Limassol police chief, Tasos Economides, with regard to the popular teenage hangout of Galatex in the Yermasoyia area, which has come under fire for being the scene of underage drinking, drug abuse and sex, resulting in more, but in every respect inadequate policing of the area, as confirmed by the deplorable rape of a 14-year-old girl last weekend.

We are informed that the force has in its hands a DNA sample from the rapist, and is calling in a number of people matching the suspected ethnicity of the attacker to come forward and provide the police with DNA samples. Who is Economides kidding?

The police force should be up in arms over this incident; they should get off their rear ends and demonstrate to the unfortunate parents of this child and the population at large that their hard earned taxes are being used appropriately; calling in a number of people to give samples is to mock our intelligence. Calling in known felons that fit the description to give samples is one thing, what about the ones which are not known by the police, should they report to the police simply because the chief has asked them to?

If George Galatariotis’ attempts to normalise the situation in the area are genuine, the responsibility rests squarely on the shoulders of the police that is being maintained by the tax payer in exchange for protection. How paradoxical.
