Driver dies after crashing into house

A 23-year-old man lost his life in a horrific car crash in the early hours yesterday morning.

Paraskevas Panagi had been driving home to Trachoni in Limassol after a night out when, under unknown circumstances, he lost control of his car and skidded along the road, hitting one parked car and finally crashing violently into the side of a house.

“Evidently due to excessive speeding, the driver lost control of his car resulting in him skidding and hitting the wall of a house,” the head of the Limassol Traffic Department said yesterday.

The youth died instantly, while police said he had not been wearing a seatbelt. It took the fire services almost an hour to free Panagi from the wreckage before an ambulance took him to Limassol General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The owner of the house, Kokos Demetriou, was yesterday in shock as he told reporters: “I heard a noise and went outside; I saw a very bad situation. I ran and shouted but I got no answer, so I called the police and fire services.”

Panagi is the 13th victim to lose his life on the roads since the beginning of the year.
