Road tax misery

Sir,

I sympathise with B. Hornett (Sunday Mail, March 11) and the problems he experiences with renewing his road tax. After years of hassle with the Road Transport department myself, I was quite impressed when I found that I could renew online. How na?ve of me! Why for one minute did I think that it was going to work? When I found that my car was not listed, I sent several emails all of which were ignored until I finally sent one marked ‘priority’ and asked for a ‘read receipt.’ This to my surprise was acknowledged but my query was not answered. Anyone who has ever tried to telephone the Road Transport Department will know what a futile exercise that is! The phone is either engaged or allowed to ring until someone finally lifts the receiver and slams it down again.

This sort of experience reinforces my belief that no matter how much technology or modernisation is introduced to an organisation, if the people using it are rude, lazy and unprofessional, it will never work.
