Linking up Mackenzie and Kiti beaches

THE TOWN Planning Department is examining ways to unite the Larnaca beaches of Mackenzie and Kiti, which are currently separated by the town’s airport.

The Department has assigned experts to figure out the best way to do so: by constructing a bridge, an underground passage or by filling in the sea.

The matter was discussed at yesterday’s House Communications Committee meeting, following the suggestion of a number of deputies, one being Committee Chairman and DIKO deputy, Zacharias Koulias.

“At the moment, Larnaca town is cut in two,” he said after the meeting. “Funds have already been approved in the annual budget; now all that remains is to see what the experts’ study says and how the two beaches can be joined.”

It is a 15 kilometre drive to get from Mackenzie to Kiti, in-between which is Larnaca Airport.

DISY’s Tasos Mitsopoulos agreed. “This construction will offer vast tourist, town-planning and construction development to the area,” he said, adding that it would also contribute to a decrease in crime, as the intervening area is well-known for being used as a base for crimes such as drug trafficking.
