Two more arrests in case of missing Turkish Cypriot

TWO MEN believed to be linked to the disappearance of Turkish Cypriot businessman Ahmed Mesut Mendesie were arrested in the north yesterday, with the police hoping for a breakthrough in the case.

The Chief Inspector of Operations and Crime at Dhekelia Base told the Mail that their evidence “may prove crucial”. Andreas Pitsillides added that both men are Turkish mainlanders, with one of them identified as being with Mendesie at a warehouse in Avgorou just before he disappeared on Thursday lunchtime, and the other believed to be an associate.
The arrests bring to three the number of people questioned over the disappearance of the 58-year-old.

Bases authorities, in cooperation with Cyprus police, have been combing the area from Dhekelia to Vrysoulles – including a local dam and waste sites – but have not been able to make a breakthrough so far.

Mendesie’s white Toyota Corona, registration number EC 647 has also not yet been found.
“We are continuing to search the area where he was last seen in Avgorou/Achnas Forest but have in mind worst-case scenarios,” said the Chief Inspector. “However, we are still treating the case as that of a missing person.”
