Doctors shock as record numbers of babies born in two days

THREE sets of triplets were born in the space of 48 hours last week, in what Makarios Hospital described as a first.

In all, 11 new babies, the three sets of triplets and a pair of twins, came into the world within 48 hours of each other over the two-day period February 21 and 22.

Doctors at the hospital said they had never see anything like it, given the national average for triplets is 13-14 sets a year or around one set a month.

One woman gave birth to two girls and one boy, while the second and third mothers each gave birth to two boys and a girl. A woman from Larnaca gave birth to a boy and a girl.

“We usually have 13 to 14 sets of triplets a year,” one of the doctors at Makarios told CyBC. “This is the first time we have seen anything like this in the space of 48 hours. It was something of a surprise.”

Doctors said all of the babies are doing well.
