Poisonous conspiracy backfires

A 62-YEAR-OLD pensioner from Paphos is in hot water with the law after an attempt at framing a former love interest badly backfired.

The bizarre case came to light last Friday, when the retired police officer filed a complaint that two Sri Lankan women had conspired to have him poisoned.

According to the man, the two women had agreed to meet with his current girlfriend at a designated spot in a Paphos village, where they would hand her some poison. Allegedly, the girlfriend, also a Sri Lankan, was to slip the poison into the man’s food at the first opportunity.

However, according to the man’s story, at some point the girlfriend had second thoughts and, not overwhelmed by guilt, told her lover all about the nefarious plot.

Next the couple allegedly went to the spot where the poison had been hidden. The man forgave his girlfriend, and together they went to the police station to report the conspiracy.

The two Sri Lankan women, who work as housemaids, were subsequently picked up for questioning.

But as the investigation progressed, detectives discovered that the couple were being economical with the truth. On questioning the two suspect housemaids, police were led to believe that the plot was a complete fabrication.

It emerged that one of the two housemaids had previously been romantically involved with the 62-year-old man. Police now think the man made up the whole story to get his ex-girlfriend into trouble because he felt she was causing problems in his current relationship.

The two housemaids have pressed charges for injury against the man and his girlfriend. The two have been released and will be appearing before a magistrate.
