Marfin eyes health sector

MARFIN group’s leaders yesterday dismissed speculation they were bent on growing by swallowing up other businesses, saying their mission was to create jobs and boost the Cypriot economy.

“We like to think big, and are people who keep an open mind,” said group chairman Saoud Balawy.

“We believe in the development and the opportunities afforded by the Cypriot economy.”

Papadopoulos to talk oil in Greece

OIL AND gas exploration, and last year’s agreement for the two sides to start talks will take centre stage today at the meeting in Athens between President Tassos Papadopoulos and Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis.

Papadopoulos attended an official dinner with Karamanlis last night.

Green Monday power cut affects whole island

THREE power generators at the Vasiliko power station shut down at lunchtime on Green Monday, leaving nearly half the island without electricity.

Electricity Authority of Cyprus spokesman Costas Gavrielides said that two of the three generators were back up and running by 5pm, with the third however still not in operation by yesterday afternoon.

New Education Minister sworn in

THE NEW Minister of Education and Culture Akis Kleanthous was sworn in yesterday pledging to do his best for education.

The special ceremony at the Presidential Palace, was turned into a tribute to Kleanthous’ predecessor, the late Pefkios Georgiades who died suddenly last month.

Suspended sentence for horse trainer

A HORSE trainer was yesterday given a three-year suspended sentence for illegally bringing over steroids from the north for race horses.

Nicosia resident Jemal Ahmet, 51, was arrested in November 2004 after police found anabolic steroids in his Ayios Dhometios apartment.

A 62-YEAR-OLD pensioner from Paphos is in hot water with the law after an attempt at framing a former love interest badly backfired.

The bizarre case came to light last Friday, when the retired police officer filed a complaint that two Sri Lankan women had conspired to have him poisoned.
