Airports: the day of reckoning is near

A DROP in tourism and a slow rate of passenger growth is worrying airport operator Hermes, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Bob Manning said yesterday.

Manning told a tourism conference organised by the Hoteliers’ Association (PASYXE) that if numbers did not pick up soon, there would be a real problem.

Education is the secret of road safety

I refer to the constant proclamations by politicians that action is needed to improve road safety on the island.

Recently, we have had the police clamping down on drink driving and the activation of the traffic camera system, but what nobody seems to be mentioning is that the standard of driving instruction needs to drastically improve.

I must reply to the letter from David Chown suggesting that holiday makers with little money to spend are at least, undesirable and at most downright yobs dissuading other, more affluent, holiday makers from visiting Cyprus.

‘The forecast for tourism is bad’

HOTELIERS predicted more gloom for the tourism industry yesterday, but Tourism Minister Antonis Michaelides said the situation wasn’t as bad as it was portrayed.

Police waiting for advice on drunk drivers

POLICE chief Charalambos Koulentis said yesterday he had received no word from the Attorney-general regarding what practice his officers should use when met with drunk drivers.

“I have still received no word back from him,” he told the Cyprus Mail, nor could he give an indication of when he would.

Two Chinese men jailed after fatal stabbing

TWO CHINESE nationals were yesterday jailed by a Nicosia Criminal Court in connection with the fatal stabbing a fellow compatriot in July last year.

A third man was also given a jail sentence, but was released for time already served.

Man on remand order escapes from Nicosia General

A MAN who was arrested for a car theft escaped from the Nicosia General Hospital just after 7pm yesterday evening.

Panayiotis Panayiotou from the Anthoupolis area of Nicosia, had reportedly struck the officer that was guarding him and made his getaway..

Marfin Popular triples profits

CYPRUS’ second-largest lender, Marfin Popular Bank (MPB), said yesterday net profit more than tripled in 2006 with investors expected to focus on the bank’s new targets set out in its three-year business plan.

MPB, formed when Laiki Bank merged with Greek banks Egnatia and Marfin last year, said its 2006 pro-forma net profit grew 235 per cent to 396.6 million euros.

Violent scenes at village protest

FIVE PEOPLE were injured and another 12 arrested as protesters clashed with police in the Koshi area yesterday.

Protesters from the village of Lymbia in the Larnaca district were complaining about the construction of a new waste disposal plant. Villagers attempted to block off the area to vehicles of the construction company by forming a human chain.
