Rain drenched Omonia close in on APOEL

TITLE Challengers Omonia moved to within one point of league leaders APOEL after a convincing 3-0 victory over Ethnikos Achnas on Saturday.

APOEL have the chance to stretch their lead to four points again next week following the postponement of their game away to AEK Larnaca last Saturday due to a water-logged pitch.

Playing in wet conditions in Nicosia, Omonia were dancing in the rain as a rampant second half display from Yiannis Mantzourakis’ men saw Achnas finally tumble under the immense pressure from the Greens.

New Brazilian signing Marcelinho got his side off the mark on 50 minutes with a thunderous effort whilst further goals from Greek striker George Vakouftsis and another new signing Guilherme Weisheimer sealed the three points for the hosts.

Meanwhile, Anorthosis Famagusta saw their chance of catching APOEL and Omonia at the top slip further away as they could only draw away to current champions Apollon Limassol.

Anthos Solomou had given Apollon the lead before Brazilian striker William Boaventura had equalised for Anorthosis.

The result leaves Timuri Ketsbaia’s side six points behind APOEL who have a game in hand whilst Apollon lie in fourth position 12 points behind the leaders.

Olympiakos Nicosia remain in the relegation zone despite climbing off the bottom of the league standings after their 2-0 victory over Ayia Napa on Sunday.

In other games, Nea Salamina beat Dighenis Morphou 3-1 and last place AEP Paphos could only draw 1-1 with AEL Limassol.

The game between Enosis Neon Paralimniou and Aris Limassol was abandoned in the second half due to heavy rain whilst the two sides were locked at 0-0.
