‘Police told us we would die in prison’

TWO POLITICAL asylum seekers yesterday told a Nicosia Court how police had threatened them they would “die in prison” if they didn’t sign a paper agreeing to be deported back to their country.

The accusation was raised by two Cameroon political asylum seekers during their first court appearance.

Anger at dumped carcasses

THERE were calls for urgent action yesterday, after some 50 animal carcasses were found dumped at the Avdellero-Athienou landfill site.

New carrier offers €99 flights to Stansted

CYPRUS is to have another scheduled service to London, as low-cost flyglobespan offers seats from Larnaca to Stansted for only €99 per person one-way including taxes from April.

Initially, the flyglobespan web-based service will operate on Sundays and Mondays only, but from May 29 that will expand into a six day a week programme, with flights every day except Thursdays.

Poles seek support for EXPO 2012

A SPECIAL representative of the President of Poland was in Nicosia yesterday asking President Papadopoulos for his support regarding Wroclaw’s candidature to host the international EXPO exhibition in 2012.

Krzysztof Kurzydlowski said a letter from his President was, “very warmly received by President Papadopoulos”.

Church to ease procedures for divorce

THE CHURCH has made it easier for couples that have been separated for a number of years to get a divorce.

According to the Holy Synod, couples whose marriage has broken down and have been living separately for eight years will no longer encounter problems when filing for divorce.

This winter no sicker than usual

CASES of gastroenteritis increased this winter, but the number of people suffering from the flu was as expected, the Health Ministry said yesterday.
Doctor Chrystalla Hadjianastassiou, the Ministry’s Chief Medical Officer, told the Mail the rise in gastro cases was due to an international outbreak.

‘Let them use their nets’

AMATEUR fishermen are up in arms over a new ban on the use of nets, after Cyprus brought leisure fishing laws into line with those of the EU.

The matter was discussed at the House Agriculture Committee, where all deputies agreed that the change in legislation would do more harm than good.
