Georgiades struck down by sudden heart attack

EDUCATION Minister Pefkios Georgiades died suddenly yesterday afternoon after suffering a cardiac arrest.

His death left the public and political spectrum reeling, as only hours earlier he had been speaking on national radio, attended a cabinet meeting, and participated in an education seminar.
His death was announced by Health Minister Charis Charalambous at 5.30pm.

Opinionated, strong willed and sometimes downright shameless, he was hard not to like and admire for his forthrightness and desire to do the right thing.

Effort to end sex discrimination on refugees

DISCUSSIONS began in at parliamentary committee level yesterday to allow the children of Greek Cypriot mothers to gain refugee status if they were displaced from the north in 1974.

Currently the status of refugee can only be granted to the children of male Cypriots, which discriminates against the children of women who fled the north in 1974.

Police target 10 per cent drop in road deaths

POLICE yesterday unveiled plans to slash road deaths by ten per cent in 2007.
The force is set to get tough on people not wearing their seatbelts, with 17 lives unnecessarily lost last year due to drivers or passengers not wearing them. The same applies to motorcyclists not donning crash helmets, with 14 dying last year because they were not wearing a helmet.

Three hurt as tempers flare in truck dispute

THREE people were injured at Limassol port yesterday as tensions escalated on the third day of a crippling truck drivers’ strike.

Strikers Socrates Ioannou and Evripides Evripidou and Phileleftheros photo journalist Andreas Lazarou were all injured after a motorist stormed the port gates with his new car.

Oil and gas agreement with Lebanon

CYPRUS AND Lebanon yesterday signed an agreement on exclusive economic zones to facilitate future undersea oil and gas exploration following a year of negotiations.
The agreement was signed between Foreign Minister George Lillikas and Lebanon’s Minister of Public Works and Transport Mohammed al-Safadi in Beirut.
