Election fight in Larnaca

AN ALBANIAN man was arrested in Larnaca during the early hours of yesterday morning for pulling a knife on a neighbour after a heated debate regarding last week’s municipal elections.
35-year-old Kyriacos Georgiou was out enjoying a few drinks at his village association when the incident happened. The two were reportedly having a discussion that turned sour when the topic moved onto last week’s municipal elections.

The 18-year-old Albanian drew his penknife and stabbed Georgiou on his thigh and chest. According to Larnaca Deputy Police Chief Christakis Papadopoulos, the 18-year-old left the scene before returning in order to help Georgiou to the hospital.

“The two had been consuming alcohol and began discussing amongst themselves before one of the two injured the other person on the thigh and the chest using his knife. He then left the club and returned with a third person who helped them transfer the injured person to the hospital,” he said.

The 35-year-old father of four was treated in the First Aid Department of the Larnaca General Hospital and has been kept in the hospital so that doctors can monitor his situation, despite his condition being described as “safe”.

The Albanian was in Cyprus visiting his brother who is a permanent citizen in the village of Ayia Anna in the Larnaca district. He was arrested by police and will be held in custody for two days while the Regional Police Station of Kofinou continue their investigations.
