CHILDREN AS young as 11 are getting drunk every Saturday night, while others openly smoke marijuana just as regularly, a distressed parent said yesterday.
“It happens every week. Kids aged 13, 14 and 15 are getting drunk, doing drugs and staying out till 5am or 6am and everyone is turning a blind eye,” said a 41-year-old mother who wanted her name withheld.

A NICOSIA man has been found not guilty by a Nicosia Court of raping his ex-wife in November 2004.
According to arresting officers, the alleged incident happened at around 8pm after the 53-year-old defendant and his former wife had dinner with their children at his son’s flat.

No losers in municipal elections

THE FIRST female mayor of the capital was elected on Sunday when Eleni Mavrou edged out DISY’s Anna Marangou and ousted former mayor Michalakis Zampelas in a hotly contested Nicosia municipal election.
Former Interior Minister Andreas Christou was elected mayor of Limassol, while former House Speaker Alexis Galanos knocked out Yiannakis Skordi to become the new Famagusta mayor.

Mayoral elections: the close calls

SUNDAY’S MUNICIPAL elections noted a number of close calls among mayoral candidates, with some securing the top job with as little as three votes difference.
Specifically in Athienou Spyros Papouis secured 1,386 votes beating his rival Costas Siakkalo by just three votes.

Savvides threatens to prosecute absenters

ABSTENTIONS were at an all-time high in Sunday’s municipal elections, despite Chief Returning Officer Lazaros Savvides’ warnings that there could be prosecutions.
The overall participation percentage was 86 per cent, compared to the previous municipal elections when it stood at 92 per cent.

Former policeman jailed for pimping

A FORMER policeman was yesterday jailed for 14 months after pleading guilty to seven charges of prostitution, running a brothel out of his apartment and pimping.
Another man, Christos Lambrianos, also faced similar charges and was jailed for eight months.

Louis heads for Red Sea

LOUIS CRUISE Lines announced yesterday that it would be starting cruises in the Red Sea as of this month until next April aboard the Sapphire.
Operating from Safaga port in Egypt, the cruise includes visits to Aquaba in Jordan, Sharm El Sheik, Suez and Hurghada in Egypt.
