Sir,

I was driving home from work in Limassol on Tuesday night, which requires me to cross a major part of the town to reach the Limassol-Larnaca highway. As always I was appalled at the lack of self-safety of those using the roads. Let me recount the incidents that nearly cost some people severe injury if not death.

1. Cyclists riding down the wrong side of the road with no lights and dressed in dark clothing.

2. A moped rider appearing in front of me from between cars on the other side of the road, crossing in front of me with no indication and with apparent lack of interest in her own safety.

3. Pedestrians crossing the road in between traffic, with pelican and zebra crossings only a few metres away, where they could have crossed in relative safety (although you must cross with care as some drivers ignore these lights).

4. No traffic control at the Ayios Nicoloas roundabout (you get over that obstacle as best you can).

5. At the Yermasoyia roundabout, I was nearly involved in a pile up as some reckless driver decided not to heed the speed signs for the construction going on, and changed lanes constantly to get past the other drivers.

In the time it took me to get from Gladstonos street to the highway, these and similar incidents were occurring all over Limassol, yet during this time of heavy traffic movement (everyone on the way home from work) not one blue flashing light did I see, or dare I say, see a police officer on foot (are they all delivering speed camera fines?).

I know there is not any respect for the police (I see motorcyclists, with headgear protecting their elbows, riding by police cars with no response from the officers within), so any police presence would probably not deter these people.

But for crying out loud, where are the police?
