Deep shock at English School events

Sir,
I was deeply shocked to see the events coming from the English School in Nicosia in the last 24 hours.

Let me join in on the condemnation of events of this nature, which certainly do not help our cause in showing that we can peacefully coexist in this island.

We also ought to congratulate the Greek Cypriot students who went to the aid of their Turkish Cypriot classmates.

I was at the english school myself between 1969 and 1976 when tension between the communities was really running high. Yet I can never remember even an argument with any of our classmates that were of Turkish Cypriot origin. In actual fact we still keep in touch to this date.

Lastly, I have to criticise the press on the way they reported a quarrel between two 11-year-olds, which only served to fuel the events of Wednesday.

Sir,

I share my shock and dismay with the recent English School events which have a very sinister motive to create tension and hostility.

I am an English School graduate in 1977 and recall genuine friendships with our Turkish Cypriot compatriots.

The provocations by those with ulterior motives in creating such incidents and by those who try to capitalise from them will fail because we the Cypriots are mature enough to know better.
