Woman jailed for forgery and illegal entry

A FILIPINO woman has been jailed for four months on charges of forgery and illegal residence on the island.

According to the prosecution, Barrera Remedios, 44, had first entered the island back in 2003 but had disappeared soon afterwards after being given a work permit to work as a housemaid in Limassol.

It is believed that Remedios had left the island but returned sometime in October 2006 – this time via Tympou (Ercan) airport in the north.

She crossed into the south on October 18 and had requested political asylum.

But she was soon arrested after it was discovered that she had falsified her personal details to the immigration officers when she filled out the political asylum application.

According to investigators, Remedios had used a passport with the name Rea Bunda and had removed the previous picture on the passport and placed her own instead.

Appearing in court yesterday, the tearful mother of five – who had previously confessed to the six charges of forgery and illegal residence on the island – listened as Judge Angelos David told her that she had knowingly broke the law on a number of different occasions so she could get back onto the island illegally.

The judge sentenced her to four months imprisonment starting from the day she first remanded on October 18.
