A good chance to take up a new hobby

Did you know that a Cyprus bike team is ranked fifth in the world?

BICYCLE lovers in Cyprus are in for a real treat at the weekend, with the Bikin’Cyprus International Mountain Bike team holding a promotional event in the village of Tochni tomorrow.

The event is called ‘Bikin’, olive oil and halloumi’ and will not be about just mountain biking – participants will also have the opportunity to take part in the production of olive oil and halloumi in the village, including a discussion on how to lead a healthy lifestyle.

The Bikin’Cyprus International MTB team is an international professional Mountain Bike team enlisted in the International Biking Union since 2004 under the patronage of the Cyprus Biking Confederation. The main goal of the team is to promote Cyprus to central European countries as the ideal location for cycling during the winter months.

Our weather conditions and climate as well as the roads of the island provide cyclists with the opportunity to train or take part in competitions taking place on the island between October and May.

The team’s main sponsor is the Cyprus Tourist Organisation and it is made up of six members: three Cypriot athletes and three from other European countries. The members are Lene Byberg from Norway, Christof Bischof from Switzerland, Spencer Phil from the UK as well as Elina Sophocleous, Marios Athanasiades and Nikodemos Protopapas from Cyprus.

The recent successes of the Bikin’Cyprus team has established its identity in Europe and the team has received attention from foreign newspapers, magazines and websites. The team currently occupies the fifth spot in the world rankings. Apart from being Cypriot biking champion, Bikin’Cyprus team member Elina Sophocleous also represented Cyprus at the Athens Olympic Games in 2004.

For those of us who are inexperienced in mountain biking, the Tochni meeting will thankfully have a light-hearted character so that the whole family can take part. Bicycles will be available to rent at special prices at the village itself and anybody taking part will get the opportunity to cycle alongside professional cyclists and get valuable tips from them.

Anybody wishing to go along must be at the village of Tochni at 10.30am tomorrow and the event will continue on Sunday with plenty of entertainment in store for everyone.
