Where to get the weather report

THE SPATE of bad weather that has hit much of Cyprus over the last couple of weeks, has left many tourists wondering where they can get reliable up to date weather reports. Regular in depth reports are issued by the police and broadcast on the radio, but only in Greek.

ONE HUNDRED and sixty mostly Bulgarian passengers finally boarded a plane home just after midday yesterday after spending the entire morning hanging around Larnaca airport, waiting for a flight they were not sure would materialise and with no clear explanation of what had actually happened.

Man jailed for forging bank loan

A LIMASSOL man was yesterday jailed for five months after pleading guilty to forging a bank loan and illegally obtaining £3,000.

Yesterday, a Nicosia Court ruled that 38-year-old Costas Costa had deliberately forged the signature of two guarantees so that he could obtain money to buy a car back in 1999.

Today cars become cheaper

CARS will be significantly cheaper from today after Parliament yesterday voted into law a bill lowering tax rates on new and second-hand vehicle. The new law is aimed at opening up the market on the island and bringing it into line with the rest of the EU.

The vote was unanimous with the sole exception of Green Party leader George Perdikis, who objected on environmental grounds.

Judge gives battling drug addict a second chance

A SELF-confessed drug addict was yesterday given a second chance by a Nicosia Court after the judge decided to suspend the charges pending against him in two serious cases.

It was the second time that the man had been handed a suspended sentence by a court.

Woman jailed for forgery and illegal entry

A FILIPINO woman has been jailed for four months on charges of forgery and illegal residence on the island.

According to the prosecution, Barrera Remedios, 44, had first entered the island back in 2003 but had disappeared soon afterwards after being given a work permit to work as a housemaid in Limassol.

Fuse box explosion

AN elderly woman was rushed to hospital on Wednesday morning after a fuse box outside her old home on Ayios Lazarus street in Larnaca exploded, CyBC television reported yesterday.

Seventy-nine year-old Niki Spyrou Christou was taken to Larnaca General by ambulance suffering from breathing difficulties.

EU delivers new rules for liquids on air travel

AIRLINES AND civil aviation in Cyprus said yesterday they were ready for new EU rules on air passengers limiting the amount of liquids that can be taken on a flight, which will come into effect from Monday.
