Unclaimed bodies left to rot in old hospital morgue

MACABRE scenes unfolded yesterday at the old Nicosia hospital after it was found that two bodies were left to rot in an out-of-order mortuary.

The story came to light when an undertaker sought the body of a foreign man for burial. As instructed, the undertaker visited the new Nicosia general hospital, but the body was nowhere to be found.

Unfit to carry a gun

AROUND 400 new conscripts are exempted from their National Guard obligations on average every year, the National Guard Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Constantinos Bisbikas, has said.

But if the number of exempted men also includes reserves, it is believed the total figure may be closer to 1,000, if not higher.

THE ATTORNEY-general insisted yesterday that phone and internet taps would not be allowed without the proper authorisation and supervision of the state.

New airport work ahead of schedule

Thrassou visited the site of the new airport to check on the progress and inaugurate the new road network linking the airport to the outside world.
Work on the airport project started last June.

FINANCE Minister Michalis Sarris yesterday defended a government bill cutting tax rates on new and second-hand cares, calling it a “just and important social measure”.
