Terra e Mare Restaurant

A great meal every time

A couple of years ago a restaurant opened up in the Pareklissia region of Limassol, just opposite the Hawaii Grand Hotel. It was quite fancy and rumour (which turned out to be true) had it that a designer had been brought in to ensure the place exuded just the right amount of style and chic comfort without being intimidating or presumptuous. It was called Terra e Mare and from the outside, with its huge terrace, full-backed chairs, posh linen tablecloths, and staff dressed in full-length aprons, it definitely gave the impression it was an expensive place to visit.

How surprised then were its patrons – as we were the very first time – when they discovered that in actual fact the price was more than reasonable! Let me explain. The meal experience at Terra e Mare comprises four parts: the price you see on the menu includes a choice of two homemade soups; a selection from a salad buffet; your choice of main meal from the menu; and a choice from around half a dozen desserts of the day. The price you see on the menu includes all four items and starts from just £15!

Terra e Mare means Land and Sea in Latin so the food centres itself around this theme. Though there are vegetarian and pasta options, the majority of the menu comprises meat and seafood dishes, all of which sound scrumptious. I have regularly been torn between the pan seared fillet of wild duck (highlighted by forest berries and orange segments), the seafood brochette, and prime fillet of beef (grilled) with choice of sauces. Today, however, the duck won. My guest chose the fillet of beef.

No sooner had we ordered, than a waiter appeared asking us which soup we would like. The soup is served to you from a tureen accompanied by an assortment of small, warmed rolls. I chose tomato soup and my guest, mushroom. Both were rich, thick, and very tasty. We were offered both parmesan and pepper (from a large grinder) which was also served to us, and complemented the flavour of the soup nicely.

When finished, we were invited to help ourselves to the salad bar, though I think that term must be used very lightly as its selection is quite extensive. There was a wonderful selection of cold entrees, including prawns, smoked salmon, dips, salads (with a range of dressings), meats and cheeses. Knowing what was coming next, I tried to pace myself, resisting the urge to fill my plate with prawns, one of my favourites! Everything in moderation, I thought to myself with a smile.

Sitting, having finished a humble selection from the buffet, waiting for the main course to arrive gives you a chance to look around the restaurant. It is as an appropriate place for a romantic dinner, as for an engagement party, simple evening out, or business dinner. There are people from all walks of life, tourists and locals alike, those wearing business suits and evening wear, and of all ages. The atmosphere is exceptionally pleasant.

And no sooner have you seen this, than your main course arrives in all its splendour on a large white plate. My duck was ever-so-tender, surrounded by a pineapple, onion and pepper coulis which enhanced the meat’s natural flavour. The grilled beef fillet (requested medium to well done) was for a unique moment done perfectly and I couldn’t resist the morsel offered to me by my guest. Moist, tender and delicious… I was almost jealous of my guest’s choice. A colourful array of seasonal vegetables appeared for each dish, which were lightly steamed, so still a little crispy which I really appreciated.

We asked for a little time before choosing our dessert, since we were already quite stuffed at this stage, but managed to find room for crepes suzette and chocolate mousse. Again, simply delicious.

Tea and coffee followed, served in a little pot with its own tea-light heater, to ensure it doesn’t get cold. A nice touch!

We didn’t actually opt for wine, though there was a healthy assortment of international and local wines and champagnes from which to choose.

It’s rare to find a place where standards don’t drop after the initial opening, however with Terra e Mare you can be guaranteed a great meal every time at a price that is affordable. Highly recommended.
