‘Don’t expect Helios prosecutions’

LAWYERS on both sides of the Helios debate yesterday agreed it would be difficult for the police to establish criminal responsibility for the crash.
Savvas Mamantopoulos, lawyer for some of the relatives of the 121 victims, said he was not hopeful and that he expected the outcome would leave the relatives “upset and bitter”.

I have just read the report on the ‘plan to revitalise the Cyprus Tourism Industry’.

The answer is obvious to anybody outside of Cyprus – the high cost of getting there!

I love Cyprus and visit often, but getting friends to come along and share my enthusiasm is difficult when they look at the cost.

Stop dumping unwanted cats

As one of quite a few feeders of the cats at Tala Monastery, I am writing this letter aimed at the people who have recently “dumped” their unwanted kittens there.  Not only is this a completely selfish act, but has put a big strain on the cats already residing there.

Yellow card for ajet

THE EUROPEAN Commission yesterday placed ajet, formerly known as Helios, under heavy scrutiny and said it was limiting its flights within the EU.

It was the first time a European airline had faced such restrictions. The Commission said if the airline did not improve its safety standards, it could yet find itself blacklisted, according to reports from Brussels.

Cypriot mouse is ‘living fossil’

CYPRUS is the home of a previously unknown species of mouse, thought to be the first new species of mammal discovered in Europe for over 100 years, an academic paper has revealed.

The findings appeared in the peer-reviewed journal Zootaxa, an international journal for animal taxonomists.

325 snapped by the cameras

THREE-hundred-and-twenty-five people were caught by the traffic cameras on their first day of official snapping, the police revealed yesterday.

Spokeswoman Chrystalla Demetriou told the Mail that Wednesday saw 65,697 vehicles passing through cameras in all towns except Larnaca, with all figures being for speeding and jumping red lights.

A FORMER Ambassador, accused of indecently assaulting two of his secretaries, yesterday told a Criminal Court that he was the victim of an infatuated and troubled woman.

Former Cypriot Ambassador to Sweden Costas Papadimas faces multiple charges of sexual harassment against two of his secretaries during his term in Stockholm between 2001 and 2005.

Teachers ponder their position as Ministry seeks reappraisal of appointment list

THE secondary school teachers’ union, OELMEK, is considering its stance in the face of the Education Ministry’s insistence to open the four remaining chapters on the issue of educational reform.

Following a four-hour meeting yesterday, OELMEK’s central board agreed to continue its discussion of the matter next Thursday.
