Where you can recycle

Sir,
I know others will be as disappointed as I am to hear that the contents of recycling bins in Nicosia are, in fact, not being recycled (‘Bins of shame’, Sunday Mail, October 8).

I would like to inform all concerned citizens that, if they wish to recycle, Cans For Kids has been collecting and recycling aluminium for the last 16 years. We collect the cans, sort them and crush them, ready for export, and anyone interested in seeing the process is very welcome to visit our recycling centre in Nicosia. The work is carried out by volunteers (we have only one paid employee) and at the moment we process about ten per cent of the aluminium recycled in Cyprus.

As well as physically processing the aluminium, we spend a considerable amount of time talking to schoolchildren about the benefits of recycling and showing them what we do. We are grateful for every can deposited in our can banks, and you will have some idea about the amount we have recycled to date if you consider that each can is worth approximately half a cent and we have so far been able to buy over £125,000 worth of medical equipment for the children’s wards at the Makarios Hospital.

We have can banks all over the island. There’s a list of locations on our website: www.cansforkids.org
