Teenager woke up to find burglar in her room

TWO BURLGARS were yesterday jailed for 15 months each by a Nicosia Court after breaking into an apartment while a 16-year-old girl was sleeping in her bed.

Georgian nationals Boris Kardava and Bakar Mskhiladze, aged 28 and 31, had entered the Strovolos apartment of a woman who had unwittingly gone out and left the keys on her front door, while her 16-year-old daughter was sleeping in her bedroom on July 15 last year.

Both men, who were charged with breaking and entering and burglary, pleaded guilty to the charges, despite one of the men maintaining that he did not enter the bedroom of the young girl.

The court heard how the two men, who share a flat in Nicosia with relatives, had been passing by the woman’s apartment when they noticed the keys left on the door.

They then entered the apartment and began rummaging through the apartment.

At one point, one of the men entered the bedroom of the young girl, who froze in fear when she noticed the man going through her drawers. As she began to crawl slowly out of her bed, one of the men, believed to Mskhiladze, noticed her and ran out of the apartment, along with Kardava.

According to police investigators, the two men were picked up later that same evening in possession of the stolen items, which didn’t amount to more than £200.

Sentencing the men, Judge Angelos David said that the problem of burglaries was a growing phenomenon that needed to be dealt with properly by the law.

The judge also said that he was “stunned to hear how one of the defendants continued to steal despite seeing the young girl sleeping in her bed.”

Kardava and Mskhiladze were jailed for 15 months for the first charge and seven months for the second charge, with both charges running concurrently.
