Expat views of Cyprus

Sir,
Two recently published letters/articles have led me to commit my response to paper.
In one piece (‘Brits Go Home?’, Sunday Mail, August 20) we had the ‘expat’ view of new incomers to the island with its usual inaccuracies.
One of the many reasons I hear members of the “new incomers’ community” give for leaving the UK is the (so-called) upper crust who rule England for their own uses. These are the ex officer/colonial group who were already outdated when Elizabeth II came to the throne.
These people need a wake-up call: we have since moved onto a much more open and, in many ways, more honest appreciation of world society. This means that not just the ‘upper crust’ are suitable to mix with other nations.
A second, and perhaps more important letter, referred to the possibility of staging a football match in Cyprus (‘Missed opportunity to host Liverpool game’, Cyprus Mail, August 23). The correspondent, listed as originating in West Moors, UK, missed the point.
At a time when vast resources have just been spent by both the government and people of Cyprus to give aid and succour to many displaced persons from a country devastated by Israeli bombing (whether or not you agree with it), this correspondent has the barefaced nerve to accuse the people of Cyprus of ‘all take and no give’.
Can this person have been at the docks to see the refugees come in, or even the airport to see the repatriation efforts? My guess is no.
So when the authorities, who are in full possession of the facts and are concerned over the possibilities of repercussions from people who justifiably may not like Israel, point out that security will be an added expense, they are totally wrongly condemned for all take and no give. Shame on you…
