Outsiders in their own country

AGATHI was born and brought up in South Africa, her parents having set sail from Cyprus 40 years ago to seek a new life in Zimbabwe.

The family returned to the island 15 years ago and immediately experienced a wide range of problems, ones that have since beset many other South African repatriates.

Helios: of witch-hunts and fallacies

AS CAMERAS rolled and mikes were switched on, the committee of inquiry into the Helios air disaster went into full swing this week. In the space of just a few days, it has become something of a parody of the OJ Simpson trial, though without the live coverage bit. Just as well.

From debilitating illness to stunning success

FORCED to give up professional snooker due to debilitating health problems over a decade ago, British Cypriot entrepreneur Cary Kikis is now not only in perfect health, but also the managing director of one of the leading distributors of natural health products in the UK.

‘Arrested after denouncing police abuse’

A 32-YEAR-old former police collaborator turned whistleblower faces deportation after he was arrested last week on charges of being an illegal immigrant.

Jan Hazrat’s arrest follows his refusal to continue carrying out officers’ dirty work and after he filed charges of police corruption and brutality, which are still pending.

Expat views of Cyprus

Why we left Cyprus

Sir,
I read your feature entitled ‘Brits go home?’ in the internet edition of your paper (August 20), and I must say I am not surprised.

Poor treatment of customers

Sir,

During my current two-month holiday in Cyprus I have become a regular reader of your paper.
This morning I was most interested to read in the comment section an article titled ‘A shabby approach to the customer’ (August 26).

Don’t be so harsh on expats

Sir,
Allow me to respond to PH’s letter ‘Why people don’t like the British expats’ (August 27).
Wow! Such antipathy against the British requires psychiatric help, marriage counselling or both, I get the impression from his letter that PH is going through a real tough time with his British (expat) wife, how else can you explain such venomous hatred against her countrymen?

Proud of British foreign policy

Sir,

Paul Hunter (‘Blair’s foreign policy to blame for terror threat’, August 27) has missed out a few little parts from his letter.
