Shopping spree with stolen credit card

TWO MEN have been remand in custody suspected of going on a four-day shopping spree, running up just over £5,500 on a stolen credit card.

According to Nicosia CID, the theft came to light when a woman from Paphos reported her credit card stolen from her mailbox.

The woman did not realise the card had been stolen as she was not aware the bank was due to send her a new one; she got a nasty shock when JCC, a primary processor of card transactions in Cyprus, informed her that illegal transactions had been made with her card.

The two suspects, both from Nicosia, were arrested last Monday and Tuesday after one of the men walked into an electronics store and purchased £1,100 worth of equipment.

The shop attendant noticed the woman’s name on the card but was told by the suspect that the card was his girlfriend’s. After concluding the transaction, the store clerk noted down the number plate of the suspect’s car.

He was picked up shortly afterwards and reportedly told police officers: “It was me. What I else can I say? It is my fault.”

The suspect then named his friend as his accomplice and the man who had obtained possession of the stolen card.

His friend denied any wrongdoing after being arrested.

The men had also walked into a mobile telephone store and bought two mobile telephones worth around £500 whilst they had also spent £172 on petrol.

Police later found various sportswear and aftershave items at the second suspect’s home.
Judge Angelos David remanded the two men for seven days.
