Talat podium stunt throws Turkish Grand Prix into doubt

THE INCLUSION of the Turkish Grand Prix on next year’s Formula 1 calendar has been thrown into doubt as the fall-out from Sunday’s podium ceremony in Istanbul continues.

The Cyprus government was outraged after Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat presented the winner’s trophy to Ferrari driver Felipe Massa.

It was interesting to read that police officers approached two Sri Lankan men and arrested them when they realised they were selling pirated CDs and tapes of Sri Lankan songs in a Sunday market in Nicosia.

Murder suspect plays dumb at court hearing

A NICOSIA man suspected of murdering his wife and her lover yesterday caused a stir in court after delaying proceedings by continuously saying that he did not understand the two charges against him.

On August 1, Christoforos Charalambous, 29, is believed to have stabbed 45-year-old Yiannos Demosthenous 38 times in the back with a kitchen knife.

CyBC spending row

A ROW has broken out between CyBC (Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation) chairman Makis Keravnos and his predecessor Andreas Aloneftis over the finances of the state broadcaster.

A former Finance Minister, Keravnos was reportedly shell-shocked on hearing that members of the board attended around 10 subcommittees, each time receiving £50 just for showing up.

Fugitives back in custody

TWO ASYLUM seekers who escaped from their detention centre in Nicosia last week are back in custody after being caught by police in Limassol.

But police hopes to have the two men charged for breaking out of prison were quashed by Judge Michalis Ambizas, who argued the men were already in detention as illegal immigrants and it was not necessary to have them face another remand.

Greek Cypriot journalists boycott north in protest at arrests

GREEK Cypriot media yesterday announced a boycott of all events in the north for the next two weeks in response to a spate of arrests of journalists by the Turkish Cypriot side.

The decision was taken at a meeting yesterday between the Journalists Union, publishers and television channels.

Camps to house construction workers in the north

MASSIVE camps to house 25,000 construction workers in the north are to be built in and around Kyrenia and other major towns where development is taking place, Turkish Cypriot media said yesterday.
