Take Seven: Chocolate milks

Lanitis
Just like the plastic bottle of regular milk Lanitis produced a couple of years ago, this chocolate milk drink comes in a smaller and cuter version (one of only two out of the lot made with fresh milk). But come tasting time, I was left less than satisfied. Although it has vitamins A and D, apparently, it just did nothing; one tester said it tasted like medicine! It had no texture, had way too much chocolate flavouring and the powder overpowered the taste. Sorry but maybe the rose is better?

Galaxy
Although I’m not a fan of chocolate-bar based milks, I gave Galaxy a go and wasn’t that disappointed. It’s a smooth and creamy drink with a Galaxy aroma and went down relatively well. However, some of the testers were put off by the smell (again too powdery) while others found it OK (but that’s as far as they’ll go). Final verdict: if you like that creamy, slightly thick texture, go for it!

Mars
Er… why don’t you just eat a Mars bar? I really don’t get the point. Almost every tester said that this one tasted like a melted Mars bar. I could smell the caramel, the malt extract just lingered in my mouth and despite boasting a ‘only 2% fat’ sign on the package, again it was just too creamy and way too much at 310 ml. On the other hand, the Maltesers version of a chocolate milk drink wasn’t that bad. Compared to the rest it was light and easy to drink.

Cadbury’s Dairy Milk
Disappointed, let down and dissatisfied, is all I can say about this one. We all love and appreciate what Cadbury’s has done for us over the years; comforting us when everything has gone wrong in our hectic lives but why oh why did they have to bring this one out? Too sweet, too powdery, too rich and well just not good enough. I’ll stick to the bars.

Charalambides
Hoorah! Hoorah! The land of real, tasteful, chocolate milk drink still exists! I haven’t come across one person who doesn’t agree that this one is the winner. Pasteurised and homogenised, Charalambides chocolate milk drink gives the exact dosage of cow’s milk one can take in one go; mixes it brilliantly with just the right amount of choc and sets an example of what chocolate milk drinks should taste like. As far as I know, it’s one of the favourites in fridges across the island and kids love it. Thank you Charalambides for saving the day!

Kristis
Not bad! It was nice to try a chocolate milk that could possibly give Charalambides a run for it’s money but that’s highly unlikely. This one was light and not drowning in chocolate. Almost watery, Krisits have a good thing going but maybe they should think about giving the packaging a makeover.

Countre Dairy
Never seen or heard of this one before but was surprisingly left with a nice taste in my mouth. Of course, it’s the Belgian chocolate that gives the thumbs up as this one is, well… produced in Belgium. It’s a sterilised full cream chocolate milk drink but it’s half a litre so you’ll have to share. If you can take the quantity, then you’ll love this.
